Biography

Andrew Scott Gelfand, M.D., is a pediatric pulmonologist who practices at Children’s Health℠. Dr. Gelfand serves as Chief of Respiratory Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. He cares for young patients who have lung diseases, such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and neuromuscular weakness. He has a special interest in chronic mechanical ventilation for children who have trouble breathing adequately on their own.

Dr. Andrew Gelfand is with patient Gabryella in the Vent Clinic at Children's Health Specialty Center Cityville

“I really enjoy helping patients improve,” says Dr. Gelfand. “A good day is when you see a patient for follow up who was struggling to breath previously, and now they are significantly better. The relief on their parent’s faces makes the day even brighter.”

Now, in his role as Chief of Respiratory Medicine, Dr. Gelfand works to enhance the pulmonary programs that we presently have such as high risk asthma, cystic fibrosis (CF) and sleep. He also hopes to develop new programs such as pulmonary hypertension and primary ciliary dyskinesia with the help of his colleagues. His main focus will also be to help grow a small but exceptional group of pediatric pulmonologists. He also provides mentorship to physicians in the pediatric pulmonary fellowship program.

Dr. Gelfand was inspired to become a doctor when he was just five years old. “I really liked my pediatrician,” remembers Dr. Gelfand. “He was friendly, funny and took good care of me and my family; he was a good role model.”

Over the years, Dr. Gelfand has earned recognition numerous times on D Magazine’s list of “Best Pediatricians.” He also appears on the list of “Mom-Approved Doctors for Pediatric Pulmonology” in Dallas Child parenting magazine. He has been named a “Texas Super Doctor” in Texas Monthly magazine.

Dr. Gelfand is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, American Thoracic Society, Dallas County Medical Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

He also serves as a Clinical Professor at UT Southwestern. At home, Dr. Gelfand likes to spend time with his wife and their four grown children. He also loves spending time with his grandson. He enjoys golfing, boating, and traveling.
