Biography

In essence, a pediatric anesthesiologist works with children to provide safe pain relief from illness, injury or disease, or sedation for surgery. But for Dr. Amy Hogge, her job is much more about engaging with her young patients on a deep level.

“I like combining my experience in pediatric medicine and anesthesiology with my desire to care for each child as an individual,” she says.

She considers all of her patients to be “her kids,” visiting with them even when her services are not required, and staying in touch with them over the years.

“I truly enjoy keeping up with them and watching them grow up,” she says.

Because many of the children Dr. Hogge sees have complex medical problems that affect many parts of their bodies, she finds it a rewarding challenge to evaluate these complex problems and plan for safe and effective pain relief or sedation. In addition, she enjoys working with the families of her patients to put them at ease.

We not only want to make sure our patients are comfortable and safe, but that we provide that care in a warm and compassionate manner that is appropriate for each individual.

She also enjoys the collaborative nature of her job. “I really appreciate the opportunity to share with other pediatric care givers at Children’s,” she says. “We not only want to make sure our patients are comfortable and safe, but that we provide that care in a warm and compassionate manner that is appropriate for each individual.”

I like combining my experience in pediatric medicine and anesthesiology with my desire to care for each child as an individual.

Dr. Hogge is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois – Peoria and completed a pediatric internship at Methodist Hospital of Indiana. She completed an anesthesiology residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital, a pediatric residency at Methodist Hospital of Indiana, and a pediatric ICU fellowship at Children's Health.

Before studying medicine, Dr. Hogge considered becoming a veterinarian. She expresses her love for animals by caring for her five dogs.  She has two adult children, both of whom are in training for careers in psychology.

She is a member of the American Society of Anesthesia and the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia, among others. She has practiced at Children’s Medical Center since 1986 and has extensive experience with pediatric neurosurgery and general surgery procedures.

Outside of her practice, Dr. Hogge enjoys reading, gardening and playing the piano.
