The Epilepsy Center at Children’s Medical Center Plano was designated a Level 3 epilepsy center in April by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
A Level 3 designation – the second-highest from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) – recognizes that Children's Medical Center Plano provides advanced evaluation and treatment resources for pediatric epilepsy, including an 8-bed epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU), around-the-clock electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and onsite neuropsychologist.

The Epilepsy Center at Children’s Medical Center Plano sees more than 1,900 children every year. Specialists from neurology, neuropsychology and neuroradiology come together to evaluate patients from every angle to determine the best course of treatment – whether that’s medication, diet or surgery.
The center performs more than 600 EEGs each year, and around 200 patients are admitted to our EMU each year for Phase I seizure evaluations using the latest technologies. This includes 24/7 video EEG, where patients can be monitored remotely, including in outpatient, the emergency department and the pediatric intensive care unit.
Our EMU also offers neuropsychological evaluation and neuroimaging testing, including structural MRI, functional MRI, PET and SPECT.
Access to Phase II Monitoring, Surgery

If needed, we can transfer patients to our Level 4 Epilepsy Center at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. The team there uses the latest technology, including robot-assisted stereo electroencephalogram (SEEG), to pinpoint seizure zones in children with difficult-to-localize epilepsy. Thanks to the Robotized Stereotactic Assistant (ROSA), procedures are shorter, less invasive, so children have fewer complications and faster recovery times.
For children who respond poorly to drug treatments, corrective surgery may be the best option for overcoming seizures. The care team at Children’s Medical Center Dallas can match patients with the surgery that’s right for them, whether that’s laser ablation, resection and neurostimulation device implantation.
