I am a community-based specialty provider. How do I know whether I need to enter infusion orders for my patient via Epic or if I need to access infusion orders via Children’s website?
- If you have full access to Children’s Health℠ version of Epic you will need to enter infusion orders via Epic.
- If you have access to Epic via EpiCareLink, you will need to visit Children’s website for the list of approved therapy plans and the referral process.

I need help understanding the Special Procedure Unit (SPU) ordering process. Who should I contact?

What should I tell my patients to expect once the therapy plan order has been placed?
- Once a referral to Special Procedure Unit (SPU) has been made, families are generally contacted within 2-3 business days to set up the infusion appointment. In general, appointments are scheduled 2-3 weeks out.

My patient has had a positive COVID test in the past. Can they come to the Special Procedures Unit (SPU) for their infusion?
- Please note any infectious disease status on the referral form. Our team will follow up with Infection Prevention to determine next steps and will contact you once a plan has been made.

I would like to talk to one of the nurses in the Special Procedure Unit (SPU) about an upcoming patient appointment. How do I contact them?

- For our anxious patients, we do have child life staff available in clinic to assist with support for patients during IV starts.

- The prior authorization process generally takes 2-3 weeks.

The Special Procedure Unit (SPU) will draw my patient’s labs. How will I get those results?
- Community based specialty physicians can access lab results by visiting https://physicianportal.childrens.com/registration/ and completing the portal registration.

The SPU nursing team is not responsible for managing or notifying referring providers of lab results unless they are a condition of treatment within the infusion orders.

My patient is starting a new drug. Who will handle patient education?
- It is our expectation that the referring provider office will provide any necessary education and follow up for patients receiving special procedure infusions.
