Pharmacists collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to conduct research, provide education, and engage in continued performance improvement. Pharmacists also utilize innovative approaches including automated drug dispensing systems, robotics, point-of-care drug administration and documentation, CPOE and barcoding technology from pharmacy to bedside to optimize the efficiency and safety of the medication dispense process.

Program Purpose

The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency is designed to build upon competencies developed during a postgraduate (PGY1) pharmacy residency program.  The purpose of the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency is to develop knowledge and skills to provide expert pharmaceutical care to pediatric patients. The PGY2 resident participates as an integral member of an interdisciplinary team caring for children, assuming responsibility for pharmaceutical care of these patients. The PGY2 residency graduate will possess competencies that enable success as a clinical pharmacist in any chosen area of pediatric clinical practice, attainment of board certification, and successful mentoring of pharmacy students and residents.

Educational Outcomes

• Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills in the pediatric patient care setting
• Optimize the care of inpatient and outpatient pediatric patients by providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
• Serve as an authoritative resource on the optimal use of medications used to treat pediatric patients
• Evaluate, manage, and improve the medication-use process in pediatric patient care areas
• Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training or educational activities for pediatric health care professionals, health care professionals in training, and the public
• Conduct pediatric pharmacy research

Program Structure

The program director will develop an experiential plan at the beginning of the program for each resident.  The experiential component shall consist of the following core or elective learning experiences (see image below).  The needs and interests of the resident and the attributes of the residency program will be utilized in the development of the plan.  Additional elective rotations may be available based on the resident’s interest and skill set.
