b'RESEARCH AND INNOVATIONS PUMPKIN TRIALChildrens Health is participating in the Pumps for Kids, Infants and Neonates (PumpKIN) trialto test the Jarvik 2015, a new ventricular assist device (VAD) for children with advanced heartfailure. This device is the first and only implantable VAD with a continuous flow designedspecifically for infants and children. An effective VAD designed for children can help us buy time for our patients as they await transplant. We foresee this trial will help improve outcomes for children with advanced heart failure, says Robert Jaquiss, M.D., the surgical principal investigator in the PumpKIN trial. HEART VALVE STENT Childrens Health is one of four hospitals in the U.S. and the only in Texas selected to participate in an early feasibility study for an innovative heart procedure on pediatric patients. Global leaders in medical innovations for structural heart disease, Medtronic and EdwardsLifesciences, have created a new heart valve stent that allows surgeons to downsize a patients pulmonary artery and use a transcatheter valve. This type of stent replacement will save young patients from open-heart surgery and the complications that can follow.
