Sports neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship

The Children's Health Andrews Institute (CHAI) Sports Concussion Program Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sports Neuropsychology (APPIC #9243) was established in 2019 and offers a comprehensive training experience in the assessment and treatment of sport-related concussions. Fellows interested in pursuing board certification have access to rotations in general pediatric and adult neuropsychology clinics, structured in accordance with Minnesota Conference guidelines. This training pathway prepares fellows for board certification in clinical neuropsychology while simultaneously developing specialty expertise in sports neuropsychology.

The Children’s Health Andrews Institute Sports Concussion Program

The CHAI Sports Concussion Program offers a high-volume, fast-paced clinical experience within a multidisciplinary team of sports medicine specialists. Fellows engage in advanced, individualized care for sport-related concussions across all levels of competition from youth athletes to professionals. Sports neuropsychology fellow responsibilities include brief neuropsychological evaluations of both pediatric and adult athletes, as well as extended batteries when clinically indicated. Beyond sports-related referrals, CHAI also serves children as young as 4 years old through college-aged patients with non-sport related concussions.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the fellowship is a hands-on sideline experience at sporting events across North Texas. During the first year, fellows receive direct training in sideline assessment from their supervisors and spend the fall season paired with a CHAI Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician (PCSM), attending weekly high school football games and gaining exposure to all aspects of sideline sports medicine. This experience offers invaluable insight into the role of the sports neuropsychologist within the broader sports medicine ecosystem. In their second year, fellows take on a more active role, providing sideline support alongside CHAI PCSMs and Orthopedic Surgeons serving as Team Physicians.
