Erik Nels Hansen, MD $$

Erik Nels Hansen, M.D., is a board certified pediatric general and thoracic surgeon at Children’s Health℠. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, a service chief for General Surgery at Children’s Medical Center at Dallas and the surgical director of the new Comprehensive Anorectal, Motility and Pelvic Center at Children’s Health. He has broad clinical interests that include colorectal, oncologic, thoracic and hepatobiliary disease and advanced minimally invasive surgery. 

Dr. Hansen completed his general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, which included two years of metabolic research and the completion of a Master of Public Health degree program. After finishing his pediatric surgery training at Children’s Hospital of Alabama, he spent the nine years living and working in Kijabe, Kenya, as a general and pediatric surgeon at AIC Kijabe Hospital and BethanyKids Kijabe Hospital.  

He joined the Children’s Health medical staff in 2019. Dr. Hansen is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. 

Dr. Hansen lives in Dallas but continues work with his colleagues in East Africa. He enjoys basketball and detective novels when he and his wife aren’t too busy keeping up with their four children.
